The project Händelsernas Centrum present a children’s book about the transformation of Kiruna.
Händelsernas Centrum (The Center of Events) was presented as part of the program in Kiruna for the 2024 edition of the Luleå Biennial. In the project, students from the program Child Culture Design at HDK Valand University conducted participatory activities together with children from three Kiruna schools. The activities resulted in two public play sculptures, on display in Kiruna during spring and summer 2024, as well as the new childrens’ book Move Sirdde Flytta which is now available to read online.
The story revolves around a young hare whose mother is working on moving the city. The little hare does not want to move, even though the large hole from the mine keeps growing.
Move Sirdde Flytta functions as a documentation of Händelsernas Centrum as a whole and raises thoughts and feelings shared by the children who participated in the project. The book’s contents are rooted in the experiences and thoughts expressed by the children during conversations and workshops, regarding the ongoing urban transformation in Kiruna. Conversations have taken place in both Sámi, Swedish and English, which is reflected in the trilingual format of the book.
When school started in fall 2024, the book was distributed to all four- and five-year-olds in the city, as well as all preschools.
