The History of The Luleå Biennial

Documentation from the multi art-performance 'Eldens Dröm' (The Fire's Dream), Luleå ARcTic Festival, 1996. Photographer: Dan Lestander & Ricky Sandberg.

Luleåbiennalen (The Luleå Biennial) is an international art biennial taking place in the northernmost region of Sweden. Initiated in 1991, it is the oldest art biennial in Scandinavia.

Initially led by the artisic group KILen, the Luleå Biennial was taken over by Folkrörelsernas Konstfrämjande, The People’s Movement for Art Promotion, in 2018, with the aim to create a recurring art event which spread throughout all of Norrbotten. Since 2018, Konstfrämjandet operates as the organizer of the biennial.

Archive

Since 2023 we are working on collecting and cataloguing information and documentations from all previous iterations of Luleåbiennalen in our archive, here on the website.

The image above is a photographic documentation from Eldens Dröm ("The Fire's Dream") – a multidisciplinary performance on ice that was part of the Luleå Biennial 1996 – Luleå ARcTic Festival. The performance revolves around an impossible love story between a flame and a snowflake. It was very cold in Luleå when the performance took place, and the aim of making the audience shed a tear – which, due to the cold, would turn into ice – was achieved.

Eldens dröm was written by Dan Lestander and Ricky Sandberg and performed by figure skaters Therese Ring and Alexander Majorov.
