What do we learn from making? The journey of Garland magazine

“Theory and practice are often considered separate pursuits. Yet we know that in fields like craft, knowledge is gained through making. While we consume the objects made by hand, how do we value the knowledge that is gained?”

Garland magazine is an organic platform for sharing stories behind what is made in the wider world. It hosts thinkers and makers from 73 countries who are inspired by the commitment each other makes to keep their cultures alive, with their own hands.

The Knowledge House for Craft is an association and online platform that has emerged alongside a generation of “thinker-makers” who articulate ideas through their skilled use of materials and considering ways of exchanging knowledge that respects the maker as author.

Kevin Murray is the editor of Garland and a knowledge worker for the crafts. He is currently Vice-President of World Crafts Council – International. 2000 – 2007 he was Director of Craft Victoria where he developed the “Scarf Festival” and the “South Project”. He has curated many exhibitions, including “Water Medicine: Precious Works for an Arid Continent” and “Seven Sisters: Fibre Works from the West”. His books include “Craft Unbound: Make the Common Precious” (Thames & Hudson, 2005) and with Damian Skinner, “Place and Adornment: A History of Contemporary Jewellery in Australia and New Zealand” (Bateman, 2014). He is currently the international curator of the Tel Aviv Craft & Design Biennale.
