African Proverbs, Youssef Tabti. Luleåbiennalen 2013.

Youssef Tabti (b. 1968, France), is an artist based in Germany.

Much of African history has been passed on through the generations by oral means. Across the continent many nations spread proverbs, a kind of saying that educated and inspired those who employed them. As a consequence, morals crystallised in the form of proverbs. This piece consists of a collection of such proverbs that I gathered from across the African continent and finalized as printed posters. They are part of my project Colonial His-story or SCENE(s) MISSING which theme is colonialism in Africa. By employing new modes of presenting knowledge my intention is to provide an understanding of the background and problems of African states today.

Youssef Tabti is a concept artist with French and Algerian roots currently living in Germany. Tabti spent his childhood in both France and Algeria and as an artist he applies this duality of thought to his artistic process. Current political topics are of high importance in his artwork and he invites the audience to focus their attention on art and politics at the same time.
