LB°24 — Participants
Marion Denis (b. 1973, Germany), is an artist based in Germany.
This piece deals with the biological and cultural construction of gender and sex and its pictorial representation. I combine aspects of scientific work with photographic processes as I am interested in the intersection of these two fields. My interest is also directed at the German sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld, who in the early 20th century explored gender identity and photographed intersexed individuals, transvestites and homosexuals. His explicit images depict a search for knowledge, but at the same time they expose the limits of pictorial representation. He aspires to reveal the variety of gender, whereas his body images stay ambiguous. With my project I offer my own perspective on androgynous looking people. Different human characteristics are joined in one picture without assigning them to gender categories. I combine these photographs of androgynous looking people with pictures that I took of my brother at puberty 15 years ago.
Marion Denis was born in Aachen, Germany. She has an interest in the intersection of the scientific and photographic fields. Her work features staged portraits and still life, as well as documentary and found footage.
