José Luis Torres (b. 1968, Argentina), is an artist based in Canada.
With my work, I am looking to stimulate the relationship that is established between the installation location, the piece itself and the individual interacting with it. My art, which mostly touches sculpture, tends to frequently involve architecture. My pieces often move from works being produced to spontaneous configurations which have an aspect of openness to them. Most of the time, I use construction yard and demolition scrap to create my pieces. They become constructions featuring many sub-spaces in which one can move about or which function as architectural elements – constructions and “deconstructions”– that explore the ways in which we occupy space by modifying the area, by overhauling it. The objective behind my architectural interventions is the act of giving form to a purpose. They are founded upon a perceptive experience.
José Luis Torres has been living and working in Quebec, Canada since 2003. He has a bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts, a master’s degree in Sculpture and is trained in architecture and integrating art with architecture. Torres’ work has been on display in more than thirty Canadian cities and almost a dozen different countries. His pieces can be found in public and private collections around the world.
