A town that no longer exists.

The city of Messaure in Jokkmokk municipality no longer exists as a physical site, but holds great historical significance as one of the largest hydropower plants in Europe. When it was still a thriving society, the hydro power generated here supplied nearly half of Sweden's electricity needs. Born alongside the colossal dam, Messaure expanded into a flourishing community accommodating up to 3000 residents during the middle of the 1900s, with schools, churches, grocery stores, a cinema, and more. However, over time the community gradually depopulated, leading to a decline in services and the closure of many of its operations.

Today, all that remains of Messaure is a road sign bearing its name, as a reminder of its existence.
