By looking, smelling and making together, we are introduced to reindeer leather from various perspectives in this workshop led by duodji master Katarina Spik Skum.

The Luleå Biennial 2022 presents several works by Spik Skum, among others Mujtton I and II. Memories of áhkko’s bags, where she explores reindeer leather from a historical perspective as well as a contemporary expression. In her workshop Spik Skum teaches us about the difference between natural tanning and industrial tanning, and talks about how the tanning process affects the uses and results of the leather. But primarily, we will get to know the leather under Spik Skum’s knowledgeable leadership by creating small objects ourselves.

Katarina Spik Skum is a duojár (Sámi crafter) and textile artist based in Jåhkåmåhkke (Jokkmokk). She works on commission as well as initiates her own projects and relates to craft in both traditional and experimental ways. Spik Skum holds an MA from Sámi allaskuvla (Sámi University) in Guovdageaidnu (Kautokeino), Norway and frequently shares her knowledge through lectures and workshops.

The workshop is part of the seminar Earthed Imagination and organized in collaboration with the Craft and design Consultant of Region Norrbotten.

The workshop will be in Swedish, maximum 12 participants.
