Weaving Kiosk

Weaving Kiosk, 2017/2022, Rosa Tolnov Clausen, photographer Johannes Romppanen

Haparanda City Culture Department and Aine Art Museum have an ongoing collaboration across national borders, in Swedish Haparanda and Finnish Tornio. Together with these two institutions, Rosa Tolnov Clausen will, between 5th of December and 11th of December host Weaving Kiosk workshops in Haparanda and Tornio.

Guests of all skill levels are welcomed, provided technical guidance and supported by Rosa Tolnov Clausen and her ongoing collaborators in a Weaving Kiosk. Drawing from Nordic kiosk culture, Weaving Kiosks are generally located at street level, allowing uninitiated users to pop in and have a go at weaving. They are also open to advanced weavers seeking an opportunity to weave in an alternative space and immerse themselves in an environment where they will learn and share with other weavers.

During her residency, Tolnov Clausen will visit weaving practitioners, places, and institutions related to handweaving in Tornedalen and Norrbotten, highlighting the fact that weaving cultures, however geographically and culturally specific, can weave over and under institutional borders and boundaries.

Rosa Tolnov Clausen is a textile designer and PhD researcher who works in the intersection of craft and design. She often creates physical spaces around the practice of handweaving, using craft as a catalyst for physical, social, and creative interactions.

Haparanda municipality’s arts department promotes the arts dynamically and inclusively within the municipality of Haparanda, as well as managing its public art and cultural heritage sites.

The Aine Art Museum shows and manages an art collection that focuses on contemporary art, particularly works from Northern Finland. The museum stages exhibitions from the permanent collection as well as temporary exhibitions, and organises workshops and lectures.
