ARcTic Festival Luleå 1991

The very first edition of Luleåbiennalen was titled ARcTic Festival Luleå and took place between February 12-17 in 1991.

The biennial was initiated by KILen - Konstnärer i Luleå ("KILen - Artists in Luleå", later simply know as Kilen) as a snow sculpture festival at Gültzauudden (the Gültzau cape) in Luleå. For a number of days, each invited artist worked on site in Luleå and created a sculptural piece made from a 3x3x3 m snow cube.

With participating contestants from each of the municipalities in the region.

Already from the beginning, the biennial has had a clear international ambition with invited artists coming to attend from all over the world. For a long time, the biennial was the only platform in Norrbotten which presented international art to the local audiences.

The documentation of the earliest editions of the biennial are not digitizede, but we are continuously working on expanding and updating the archive here on our website and hope to be able to share more images with you shortly.
