Architecture of Aroha presented in Aotearoa New Zealand

Objectspace is the leading gallery dedicated to design, craft and architecture in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand. On November 30 they are opening a new exhibition which will be presenting a new iteration of the project Architecture of Aroha (approximately "Architecture of Care").

Architecture of Aroha is a collaborative project including craftspeople from Sámi and Māori communities and traditions, and it was first presented to audiences in Sápmi/northern Sweden in spring of 2024 as part of the Luleå Biennial - On the Threshold of 1:1.

Architecture of Aroha presents two objects that hold important cultural significance: the wahakura and the gietkka, baby sleeping vessels from Māori and Sámi communities respectively. The wahakura and gietkka do not exist purely as objects. Rather, they are part of an intricate constellation of knowledge, design and spirituality.

For the project's iteration in November, Gunvor Guttorm has worked with Ngaroma Riley to create a gietkka in Aotearoa. The exhibition will be on display until March 16 2025.
